Official photos of N900 and N97 Mini lift the curtain of Nokia World

With only several days remaining to the start of the Nokia World event, we can already feel the excitement building up. We already got one announcement yesterday just to warm us up but we are certainly hoping that more will follow once things get rolling in Stuttgart on 1 September.

After the preview that popped up yesterday we were quite confident in predicting that the Nokia N97 Mini will be one of the new devices to be announced at this year's Nokia World. The trimmed-down version of the company multimedia flagship has now made another unofficial appearance, through a leaked press shot. It certainly doesn't give any more information that we already have, but it's another confirmation that the actual launch of the handset cannot be far away.

Update 27 August: Today, a day later, we spotted a bunch of new Nokia N97 Mini photos. It seems like it's traded the boring old black color for a much hotter copper styling.

The other device that made an appearance in similar fashion is the Nokia N900 former tablet. Again previewed ahead of announcement, the Maemo-based smartphone is certainly quite far ahead in its development and it will hardly be a surprise if we see it announced next week. And it certainly looks like a real beauty at those official shots, right?

So stay tuned as the Nokia World unveils next week and tells us if there is more left to unveil.

Nokia 5230 announced, 3G and GPS onboard

Nokia are obviously getting more and more serious about their touchscreen portfolio. Hot on the heels of the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic, they have announced the Nokia 5230 - an entry-level touchscreen handset. The newcomer has the same dimensions as the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic but looses the Wi-Fi and has only a 2 megapixel camera.

Much like the Nokia 5800, the Nokia 5230 sports a 3.2-inch resistive touchscreen with a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels, FM radio, 3.5 mm audio jack and microSD card slot. The camera has been downgraded to 2 megapixel resolution but manages the decent VGA@30fps video recording.

Nokia 5230 runs the latest Symbian S60 5th edition and is powered by the same battery as 5800 - a 1320 mAh one, which is good 320 mAh larger that that of the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic. According to the manufacturer the 5230 will be capable of 33 hours of non-stop music playback.

The final noteworthy features of the the 5230 include Ovi Maps and social networking integration such as Facebook, MySpace and YouTube.

The available inbox colors for the Nokia 5230 are black and white for the front panel and red, pink, blue, yellow, silver and dark silver for the rear covers.

The handset will be available in Q4 this year for a recommended price of 150 euro before taxes or subsides. It will also be distributed in a Comes With Music package in certain markets, priced at 259 euro before subsides and taxes.

And here is a short promo video of the new handset, that underlines, what Nokia consider to be its key features.

HTC Dream is the first HTC-branded Android phone

HTC have just announced their new HTC Dream, an HTC-branded clone of T-Mobile G1. HTC Dream will be targeted at Asia and Australia exclusively thus becoming the first Android handset Down Under (sorry, Kogan).

In an obvious attempt to stay out of the way of T-Mobile G1, HTC are releasing their Android-powered HTC Dream only in Asia and Australia. Customers of SingTel and their Australian subsidiary, Optus, should soon be able to get their hands on the HTC Android device.

We can't really say anything new about the HTC Dream specs - it's identical to T-Mobile G1. You get a 3.2 megapixel camera, a 3.2-inch slide-out touchscreen plus a full QWERTY keyboard. There's Wi-Fi and GPS on board and you can rely on HSDPA for fast cellular data transfers.

Samsung S3500

samsung S3500 has a styling quite similar to the highly successful U900 Soul. Functionality-wise however it stands a couple of levels lower than the company's upper midrange flagship.

The S3500 sports quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity as well as Bluetooth and USB. The handset will sport a 262K color QVGA display of yet unknown size. It also has 35 MB of internal memory, expandable through the microSD card slot.

There is yet no information about the availably or the pricing of the handset but with MWC 2009 due in a couple of weeks we might just get to see it in person.

tmobile-g1-closed.jpgT-Mobile USA has officially confirmed what unofficially has been the talk of the town--the debut of the first Google Android based mobile phone. The T-Mobile G1 is made by HTC (the device was code named the HTC Dream) and was introduced this morning at a press conference in NYC. While this is the first Android device to be announced there should be many more following. The G1 is a T-Mobile exclusive (both USA and Europe).

Specs and features of the G1 include:

  • Quad-band GSM / Dual band 3G / EDGE / Wifi
  • Touch screen with iPhone like dragging
  • Slide out QWERTY keyboard
  • 3 megapixel camera with auto-focus
  • Amazon MP3 store app to download DRM-free songs over WiFi
  • Multi-tasking
  • IM (Yahoo/MSN/AIM/Google Talk)
  • Google Maps with street view
  • HTML email client (POP3 and IMAP) plus contact and calendar syncing for Gmail users
  • Web browser using WebKit

The G1 will retail for $179 with a 2-year contract when it starts shipping on October 22nd. Current customers can order online and the G1 will be delivered when it's launched. Like the iPhone, the G1's service agreement requires a data plan. Unlimited data with 400 messages runs $25 monthly while unlimited data and unlimited messaging will cost $35 monthly. Since it's a 3G device the phone will only be made available in T-Mobile's current 3G markets. You can use T-Mobile USA's coverage search tool to find out if your area is 3G or not, though the number of markets should be expanding rapidly. The G1 will not be available without a contract or via pre-paid service.
